Lieutenant Berger, Jack, Roy James, and Richardson Pierce sat in the living room of the guest house. The three were being quiet in their effort of not waking Cassie, who was asleep in one of the back bedrooms.

Pierce looked at Berger. “What do you think, Lieutenant?”

Berger gave him a questioning look, uncertain as to what he meant.

“What happened to my son that caused this accident?”

“I . . . I don’t know yet . . .what transpired, if anything, prior to your son’s accident. I don’t have . . .”

“Jack,” Pierce said, his tired, red eyes shifting over to Jack. “Did you see anything . . . any vehicle in the vicinity at the time?”

“No, I didn’t. In all the confusion, a car could have come by, but I don’t recall seeing one,” Jack said.

“There was not a vehicle in front of you that may have caused Rich to cross the center line? Or perhaps one that was behind him that may have passed him and maybe sideswiped him and pushed him over into your lane and into the field?”

“No sir. I didn’t see one. And I don’t think that happened. Rich . . . your son . . . in my opinion, had already been injured before we saw him.”

“Tell me about that, Jack. I know you told Roy and the Lieutenant here, but you haven’t told me. What, exactly, did you see? Why do you say that, in your opinion, Rich had already been injured before you met him?”

“Well . . . there . . . there was no face. Where the face should have been, there was nothing . . . but red pulp.”

Richardson Pierce jerked backward and grimaced.

“I’m sorry, Mr. Pierce. I didn’t mean to . . .”

“No! I need to do this. I need to know. Go ahead.”

“I saw him, and then I saw his car cross the embankment and go airborne. It landed towards the front end, and then it disappeared from view because it was covered up in field dirt. Huff pulled our car back onto the road, and that’s when we saw the car go up in flames. It actually exploded.”

“What did you do afterward? After he wrecked.”

“We stopped and looked back at the car. It was in the field burning. It erupted into a ball of fire.”

“Did you get out? Did you try and help in any way?”

“The car was totally engulfed in flames. There was nothing we could do.”

“But, did you think about seeing if you could have done something?”

Jack’s mind replayed the exchange between him and Huff . . . we gotta go back and check on him. What the hell are you talking about Jack? I’m sitting here with a cooler of beer, not to mention the beer on my breath. The last thing I want to see or talk to is a State Trooper. No way I want to get involved in this. Pull that damned door shut, and let’s get the hell out of here.

“I ahh . .
